Working with Characters

The Character page is synchronized to the active manuscript. To work with a character in a manuscript other than the active manuscript, change to the desired manuscript listed in the combobox at the top right of the Character window. Writers Project Organizer Character grid

To create a Character, enter the required data into the data grid. The Gender and Type are mandatory fields. You will not be able to save the Character until you have selected data for those fields and entered at least the Character’s name. All other fields are optional.

To Add/Edit or Delete the character Type click on the ‘Add/Edit/Delete Type’ button on the toolbar. In the above example, that button is the fourth from the left (the brown box).

DOB (Date of Birth), DOD (Date of Death): Choose between two types of entries for the DOB & DOD for your characters. Enter the dates in the Short-Date-Format, OR opt to enter them as text, allowing you to type in any type of date format, to include not typing in a date at all.

In the above image the DOB field is a Date/Time field, requiring formatting the date into the proper Short Date format. Using the text fields for DOB, you could enter the date as October 10, 1800. Or 10-10-1800, or Oct 1800, et cetera.

Because of the way the dates are formatted in the database they are not interchangeable. If you enter a date for character ‘John Smith’ using Short-Date-Format and then later change to the text fields, the date you have previously entered will not be displayed. You will have to enter that date again. So it would probably be a good idea to plan your strategy for developing your characters in Writers Project Organizer beforehand.

Dates need to be added with Short-Date-Format The date can appear one of two ways, as illustrated, Dates can be added as text allowing you to enter the type of date best suited for you.

To change between Short-Date-Format and text fields, select the desired option from the Option menu as seen in the image.

You can export a character to your default text editor for printing. Character Options menu

You can also export your character to another manuscript. Select this option and another window will appear. Exporting a Character to a different manuscript You can then select the Manuscript you wish to export the selected character to.
